ERC Starting Grants 2008 Call for Proposals
The European Research Council announced the 2008 Call for Proposals for ERC Starting Grants for early career independent researchers of any nationality.
Research fields: any field of science, engineering & scholarship. Submission deadlines are October 29 (Physical Sciences and Engineering), November 19
(Social Sciences and Humanities), and December 10 (Life Sciences). For further information please consult the website of the European Research Council.
EUR 35 million for the establishment of new Ludwig Boltzmann Institutes!
The Ludwig Boltzmann Society announced a call for proposals for the establishment of new Ludwig Boltzmann Institutes in the fields of Social Sciences and Humanities, as well as Life Sciences. Applications can be
submitted from November 17, 2008 through January 16, 2009.

w-fFORTE and the “Austrian Research Promotion Agency” recently launched an initiative called “Laura Bassi Centres of Expertise” with the goal of enabling highly-qualified women to work on the forefront of science and industry. The six “Centers of Expertise,” will focus on applied basic research in the natural sciences, engineering and technology and will each receive up to €320.000 annually. "Austrian Literature after the Fall of the Iron Curtain: A Diagnosis"
Wendelin Schmidt-Dengler, professor of German and Austrian Studies at the
University of Vienna and Austrian Scientist of the Year 2007, will discuss
how the political events of 1989 affected Austrian and European literature.
The analysis of Austrian literature after 1990, including works by Elfriede
Jelinek, the winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature 2004, provides an
insightful diagnosis of not only the literary but also of the political and
social situation of Europe after the end of the Cold War.

Austrian Science Talk 2008 in Chicago
The Austrian Science Talk 2008 will take place on October 4 in the
Knickerbocker Hotel in Chicago. Organized by the Federal Ministry for
Transport, Innovation and Technology, brainpower austria, Ascina and the
OST, the topic of this year's Talk is "The Magic Triangle of the Future:
Research, Industry and Education". As always, the event provides an
excellent opportunity for networking with other scientists and
