“Long time, no hear” and "There's no need to reinvent the wheel“ are two statements that illustrated the need for a network of Austrian scientists and scholars in North America. In 2001, the Office of Science & Technology set out to establish the network. The network now serves as a strategic foundation for a broader understanding of the needs of Austrian researchers in North America and provides a basis for their needs to be recognized in the Austrian scientific landscape and develop paths to achieve that recognition. The OST Scientist Network can also be considered a „peer network“ in that it lends itself to easing the transition of a scientist or scholar from Austria into their new surroundings. Whether confronted with looking for a new home, registering in a new educational institute or any of the other administrative requirements of relocating, the knowledge of colleagues in the network who themselves had similar experiences often provides support and useful advice on how to proceed. The OST Scientist Network:
The longer an Austrian scientist or scholar is active in the U.S. or Canada, it becomes harder for them to remain up-to-date on occurrences in their fields in Austria and more difficult to maintain contacts as well. The OST works to solve these difficulties through its on-line publication "bridges: The OST`s Online Magazine on S&T Policy“ which is geared towards supplying news on new developments in Austria's and Europe's research scenes. One section of ""bridges"“ is specifically dedicated to the network and introduces its prominent figures to all bridges readers. Members of the network are invited to contribute their expertise to "bridges". How does one become part of the network of Austrian scientists and scholars? Simply complete the online form and submit it to the OST. "Involvement at one's own discretion without any obligation" is the vital concept in a network. For those interested in proactive involvement with other Austrian scientists and scholars in North America, the OST recommends visiting “ASciNA - Austrian Scientists & Scholars in North America” at www.ascina.at as an ideal platform for further activities.
