The Lisbon Treaty, the EU-2020 Strategy, and the "Innovation Union" Flagship Initiative bridges vol. 26, July 26 2010 / Feature Article By Martin Schmid mp3 download
2010 will certainly be remembered as a year of change for the European Union. It is the first year under the Lisbon Treaty, which, after an almost eight-year-long process of negotiation and ratification, took effect on December 1, 2009. The Union's institutions are still on the way to finding their routine under the new rules. There's the strengthened Parliament ; the "new" European Council with its elected President Van Rompuy; there is Catherine Ashton and the new EU foreign service; there is a significant increase in matters that are decided by majority in the Council instead of unanimity, and many other changes that have to be translated into the day-to-day work. If you wonder why you can't find the term "European Communities" in this article, it's because there is no such thing anymore. The EC is history, finally consumed and replaced by the European Union.Access to the full article is free, but requires you to register.
