In the Piedmont region of North Carolina is the largest research park in the US - The Research Triangle Park (RTP) - stretching over 7,000 acres in the heart of the well-established research university region of Raleigh-Durham. With more than 170 companies and 42,000 full-time knowledge, high-technology employees, it's no wonder that RTP has become the research jewel of this southern state. Established in January 1959 with $1.5 million in contributions from all over the state of North Carolina, The Park began with a portion of land comprising 4,400 acres.
