schmid_martin.jpg "The future starts today" was the title of a celebration in the new premises of the European Research Council (ERC) on September 24, 2009, in Brussels. A big crowd, several research ministers, state secretaries, Commissioner Potocnik, members of the European Parliament, and the ERC's President Prof. Kafatos among them, accepted the invitation. The "Covent Garden" - a newly built complex on Place Rogier close to the center of Brussels, which now accommodates the ERC with its 200 current staff members - provided an impressive setting for the event. Jack Metthey, director of the ERC, exerted quite an effort to make people feel welcome and provide a positive atmosphere. It was like a big birthday party. Talking to and watching the many staff members who joined the party, one got the impression that there is a good mood within the ERC. They seem to be proud to work for what might develop into the flagship of European Research Policy. And since good mood can be contagious, it was a pleasant afternoon for everyone, perfect for preparing for the meeting of research ministers in the Council the next day, where they were to discuss the ERC's future over lunch.
