On December 18, 2008, the Chairman of the Committee on Science and Technology of the US House of Representatives, Bart Gordon, presented the Committee's agenda on Science and Technology (S&T) for the 111th Congress . The stakes for the US are high: Domestically the economy is in recession and the unemployment rate is rising rapidly. Global problems - including energy, climate change, and health care - have to be addressed. S&T is key to finding solutions, although less in the short term than in the mid- and long term. In these difficult circumstances, the House S&T Committee will work hard to get some additional funding for S&T out of the gigantic stimulus package, which is currently being drafted by the Obama Team.

Bart Gordon believes that, under the new administration, an emphasis will be put on alternative energy and the linkage between energy and climate change. He is said to be very pleased with the new team on energy and environment that President-elect Obama has put together. Obama recently nominated the Nobel Laureate in physics, Steven Chu, as the new energy secretary. Chu has been director of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in California for the past four years.
