bridges vol. 18, July 2008 / Noteworthy Information Deadline for the academic year 2009–2010: August 1, 2008 The Fulbright Program, the US government's flagship program in international educational exchange, was proposed to the US Congress in 1945 by then freshman Senator J. William Fulbright of Arkansas. In the aftermath of World War II, Senator Fulbright viewed the proposed program as a much-needed vehicle for promoting "mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries of the world." Fulbright grants for scholars are made to US citizens and nationals of other countries for a variety of educational activities, primarily university lecturing and advanced research. Since the program’s inception, approximately 279,500 participants have been chosen for their academic merit and leadership potential – with the opportunity to exchange ideas and to contribute to finding solutions to shared issues. Up to 18 award opportunities are offered for US scholars who are interested in teaching and conducting research in Austria. Access to the full article is free, but requires you to register.
