![]() Walter Thirring Professor Theoretical Physics Department University of Vienna Vienna, Austria Walter Thirring is a professor of theoretical physics at the University of Vienna and the honorary president of the Erwin Schrödinger Institute. He is a distinguished mathematical physicist and the inventor of the Thirring model in quantum field theory. He has served as a director at CERN and the Erwin Schrödinger International Institute for Mathematical Physics. Previously Thirring held various positions at other leading institutes and universities such as the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH Zurich), the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In addition he is the author of many papers and books in both quantum field theory and mathematical physics. He also established the Walter Thirring Prize which is awarded for exceptional achievements in modern fundamental theories and experiments.
Thirring holds a Ph.D. in physics from the University of Vienna (1949) and numerous awards such as the Erwin Schrödinger Prize, the Max Planck Medal, and the Henri Poincaré Prize. Contributions
