In commemoration of the 60th anniversary of the historic speech delivered by US Secretary of State George C. Marshall at Harvard University, Austria’s Federal Minister of Economics and Labor Martin Bartenstein and then-US Ambassador to Austria Susan McCaw officially declared the intention of their two governments to encourage mutual cooperation through an academic exchange program. This new program, called the Marshall Plan Scholarship, focuses particularly on universities of applied sciences and technology (Fachhochschulen und Technische Universitäten). The June 2007 declaration laid the groundwork for offering as many as 1,000 scholarships for American and Austrian students between 2008 and 2017. The program will be funded and administered by the Austrian Marshall Plan Foundation.

 


About the Austrian Marshall Plan Foundation

 

The Marshall Plan Scholarship is the newest addition to the numerous activities of the Austrian Marshall Plan Foundation, which was established in 1997. The Austrian Marshall Plan Foundation was created on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the European Recovery Program, popularly known as the Marshall Plan, initiated by US Secretary of State George C. Marshall in 1947. The Foundation commissions research work in the fields of economics, and social and natural sciences. Research projects are carried out within the framework of Austrian guest professorships in the US, conferences, lectures, and symposia in Austria and the US, postgraduate research fellowships, and awards for scholarly publications. The nonprofit endowment was established to promote transatlantic exchange of knowledge. Close cooperation with the University of California – especially UC Berkeley, the John Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS), and the University of New Orleans has continued to foster that exchange of knowledge.
