bridges vol. 12, December 2006 / Noteworthy Information Since its founding in 1982, the Institut für die Wissenschaften vom Menschen (IWM) (Institute for Human Sciences) in Vienna has laid particular emphasis on the resurrection of an open exchange of ideas with academics, intellectuals, and politicians from Central and Eastern Europe, an exchange that has increasingly included researchers from North America. The scholarship programs of the IWM are thus a fundamental part of its work. The Institute's mission is to offer, in Austria, a place for research and discussion that crosses borders and disciplines.
