Dual Citizenship for Scientists

Grants and Scholarships in Austria and the EU

Grants and Schoarships in the US

Patent Information

What is the procedure for applying for dual citizenship as an Austrian scientist/scholar?
The OST provides a detailed overview of important information for Austrian scientists/scholars who want to apply for the retention of their Austrian citizenship while accepting a foreign citizenship.

Where can I find information on grants and scholarships offered in Austria?
The main source is the Austrian Database for Scholarships and Research Grants. This database contains the most up-to-date information on the topic. Further information on research grants in Austria is provided online by the grants compass, offered by the Austrian Federal Ministry of Transport, Innovation, and Technology (in German only). Also, the Web sites of the Austrian Fulbright Commission and of the Researcher's Mobility Portal Austria contain valuable tips. Information on funding of research projects can be found at the websites of the Austrian Science Fund (FWF) and the Austrian Academy of Sciences (ÖAW).

Information on scholarships and stipends for foreign students is provided by the Web site Auslaender.at (in German only). The Austrian scholarship and research grants database also offers helpful information in the search for scholarships for foreign students in Austria. It provides an overview of the possibilities for obtaining financial support for study in Austria and can also be accessed through the Austrian Exchange Service. The section "grants database" contains general information about the application process. In addition, the Bureau for Research Services and International Relations at the University of Vienna lists a variety of possible funding sources for research projects.

Where can I find information on grants and scholarships offered within the European Union?
The European Researcher's Mobility Portal presents a thorough overview of programs within the EU on an international as well as on a national level on its Web site.

What are some of the grants and scholarships offered for study or research in the US?
The Austrian Fulbright Commission provides information on Fulbright scholarships including preconditions for application, selection criteria, and the amount of possible funding.

The Austrian database for scholarships and research grants offers opportunities to apply for funding research in the US in specific areas. The US Senate has declared 2006 the Year of Study Abroad. Further information on the topic is provided by the Association of International Educators (NAFSA).

I want to patent my innovation in the United States. What steps are necessary?
The United States Patent and Trademark Office publishes information on the requirements for patenting an innovation in the US. It explains who can file a patent in the US, what can be patented and what expenses are to be incurred. Statistical material about patents in the US, the EU, and Japan is provided by the Web site of the Trilateral Cooperation between the European Patent Office, the Japanese Patent Office, and the US Patent and Trademark Office. Trilateral files offer an annual report on patent activities.
