Austria's “LANGE NACHT DER FORSCHUNG” on October 1st: Research and Security at 150 Sites
 On October 1, the first "Lange Nacht der Forschung" ("Night of Research") will take place in Innsbruck, Linz, and Vienna. Following the motto "into science!" more than 70 academic, non-academic, and commercial institutions will open their laboratory doors to the public. Starting from three "Treffpunkten Forschung" ("meeting places for research") located in the respective city centers, 13 shuttle bus routes – defined as “X.PEDITIONEN” – will lead to several sites of research. Each of these 150 sites gives insight into the various positions of contemporary research on the extensively discussed issue of security.

Calling All Astronauts: Apply to Be a Crew Member in a Mars Landing Simulation
AustroMars is Austria’s largest and most unusual space exploration simulation project. A combination of vision, science, technology and fascination will set the stage for this nearly month-long mock Mars landing in the Utah desert. “Astronauts” will replicate in exact detail a manned Mars landing and will be supported not only by Austrian scientists and space experts and Mission Control Center, but also by many enthusiastic volunteers.

The US National Academies African Science Academy Development Initiative: Harnessing Science and Technology Expertise for Development in Afr

At the root of many obstacles hindering sustainable development in Africa today one often finds problems susceptible to scientifically-driven solutions. Tackling challenges such as AIDS, malaria, hunger, lack of safe water, and high maternal mortality is central to the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) for 2015. Innovative science and technology solutions will be essential to their achievement. Science also has a central role in identifying sustainable and effective means to alleviate poverty and create the modicum of wealth needed for advancement. Africa, though, has limited and unevenly distributed scientific capacity, and the capacity found in academia and industry is not sufficiently integrated into national and regional policymaking to have the desired impact on policy and planning.
