Martin Bernhofer, specialist in theater and hispanic studies,
writer and journalist, lecturer and moderator, has been at the head of the
Science, Education and Society Department of the radio station Ö1 (Austria
1) at the Austrian Broadcasting Corporation (ORF) since November 2002. A
fish-out-of-water some might argue, Dr. Bernhofer is a highly versatile and
broadly experienced communications professional. The skills that Dr. Bernhofer
acquired over the past two decades have allowed him to gain valuable experience
and expertise in a field usually reserved for experts.

pursuing a career in the United States sometimes have their careers
impeded due to their foreign nationality. A requirement for a
higher-level security clearance, or a disadvantageous tax situation,
calls for an application for U.S. citizenship. In the cases where
mother countries do not allow dual citizenship, researchers find
themselves in a difficult, double-bind situation caught between career
and patriotism.

Standard and Technology (NIST) invited dignitaries from the greater
Washington, D.C. area to its campus in Gaithersburg, Maryland for the
official dedication ceremony of its newly built flagship project, the
Advanced Measurement Laboratory (AML).

Awards - Calls for Nominations: AAAS ISC, ISETT |

AAAS ISC 2004
The
American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) is accepting
submissions for the International Scientific Cooperation Award 2004.
Past recipients include Mahabir P. Gupta from the University of Panama
in 2003, L.S. Fletcher from Texas A&M University in 2002, and
Günther Bauer from the Institutes for Semiconductor Physics at the
University of Linz in Austria. The award, which is open to all
nationalities, recognizes individuals who contribute significantly
towards furthering international cooperation in science and
engineering. Nominations must be submitted no later than August 1, 2004.
