Heinz Gaertner is professor at the Austrian Institute for International Affairs in Vienna, Austria.


He often lectures at the Universities of Harvard, Stanford, Princeton, Columbia, Oxford and other American, European, and Asian universities and research institutes. Gaertner is the author of numerous academic articles and books (most recently, European Security and Transatlantic Relations after September 11 and the Iraq War) and has received international recognition for his work on European security. Heinz  is also a frequent commentator on European and Austrian television, radio, and print media, including CNN Europe and the BBC. He was a Fullbright Fellow at the World Policy Institute as well as the Visiting Austrian Chair at Stanford University in 2001 - 2002. In 2007, he was appointed Special Adviser to the Austrian Ministry of Defense.


Gaertner holds a Ph.D. in political sciences and communication studies from the University of Salzburg, Austria.

Professor Robert Gassner has been with the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the Medical University of Innsbruck, Austria, since fall 2003.


Previously, he worked at the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Cleft Palate Craniofacial Center at the University of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He joined the faculty there in 1997 and subsequently became Associate Professor for Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in 2000. While in Pittsburgh, Prof. Gassner also conducted clinical and basic science research as it relates to oral and maxillofacial surgery. Supported by several NIH-funded grants in cartilage matrix formation and bone cell generation and collaborations with co-investigators, his work in the Biomechanics and Tissue Engineering Laboratory focused especially on mechanical signaling and its effects on bone, cartilage, muscle, TMJ, and periodontal ligament cells during tissue turnover, regeneration and wound healing.At Innsbruck Medical University, Professor Gassner established a database of craniomaxillofacial trauma reflecting to date more than 10,000 cases. Numerous clinical articles confirm his experience in this field.


Professor Robert Gassner received his medical and dental education as well as his resident training in general and transplant surgery and oral and maxillofacial surgery from the University of Innsbruck, Austria. He is a European Board certified Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon and has an MBA Essentials diploma from Katz Business School, University of Pittsburgh.

Wilhelm B. Gauster retired in December 2005 from Sandia National Laboratories in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where he last served as senior manager and deputy director.


Prior to that, he was deputy director of the Physical and Chemical Sciences Center, where he managed nanoscience activities for defense program applications. Gauster has served as a member of numerous editorial boards and advisory panels, as an adjunct professor, visiting scientist, and deputy in the US and in Germany. He was a member of the Department of Energy Magnetic Fusion Advisory Committee and received the Department of Energy Distinguished Associate Award.


Gauster received an A.B. in applied physics from Harvard College and a Ph.D. in physics from the University of Tennessee.

Andreas Bernhard Geisler has been working for the Austrian Research Promotion Agency since 2003. He manages the Austrian Aeronautics Research Program TAKE OFF, adds his expertise to the FP6 committee "Aeronautics & Space," and is a representative on the Airbus Intergovernmental Committee.


Prior to assuming his current position, he worked for the Federal Ministry of Education, Science, and Culture; the Institute of Plant Physiology at the University of Vienna; and Unilever Austria Inc., among others.


In 2005 Andreas Geisler received his Ph.D. from the University of Vienna for his doctoral study of, "Ecosystems based structure and material balance and contribution to a carbon consistent database for Austria."

John K. Glenn joined the German Marshall Fund (GMF) in 2004 as director of foreign policy, responsible for management of the foreign policy Key Institutions and the Transatlantic Fellows and Research Fellowship programs. He is also a visiting scholar at the Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies of The Johns Hopkins University.


Before coming to GMF, he was executive director of the Council for European Studies, the leading American professional association for the study of Europe in the social sciences and humanities, based at Columbia University. Glenn also held an appointment as visiting scholar and adjunct professor in European Union studies at New York University from 2000 to 2004. Previously, he served as a project manager at the Institute of War and Peace Studies at Columbia University, where he directed a research team on evaluating NGO strategies for democratization and conflict prevention in the formerly communist states. He is the author of Framing Democracy: Civil society and civic movements in Eastern Europe (Stanford University Press, 2001) and co-editor of The Power and Limits of NGOs: A critical look at building democracy in Eastern Europe and Eurasia (Columbia University Press, 2002), as well as numerous articles in scholarly journals and publications.


Glenn holds a Ph.D. and M.A. in sociology from Harvard University and a bachelor's degree from Oberlin College. He completed the postdoctoral Jean Monnet Fellowship at the European University Institute in Florence in 1999.

David Goldston served as Chief of Staff of the House Committee on Science from 2001 through 2006, the culmination of more than 20 years on Capitol Hill working primarily on science policy and environmental policy.


Since retiring from the Congressional staff, he has been a Visiting Lecturer at Princeton University’s Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs and at the Harvard University Center for the Environment. He writes a monthly column for Nature on science policy titled “Party of One.” Goldston serves on the National Academy of Sciences’ Aeronautics and Space Engineering Board and on a panel of the Academy’s Committee on National Statistics. He co-chaired an American Physical Society study on energy efficiency and has served on panels producing reports under the auspices of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and OMB Watch.


Goldston was graduated magna cum laude with a B.A. in American history from Cornell University in 1978. He has completed the course work for a Ph.D. in American history at the University of Pennsylvania.

Since 1993, Erich Gornik has been full professor for semiconductor electronics and director of the Microstructure Center (MISZ) at the Technical University of Vienna. Apart from that, he has been president of the society "Forschung Austria" and managing director of the Austrian Research Centers since 2003.


Prior to his current positions, he was full professor for semiconductor physics and director at the Walter Schottky Institute of the Technical University Munich, spent several research professorships at numerous international research institutions, and received various awards; among others, he was nominated a fellow of the American Physical Society in 1995.


Gornik finished his diploma studies of physics at the Technical University Vienna, in 1968 and obtained his doctoral degree in 1972.

In May 2002, Louis Grenier joined the Canadian Space Agency (CSA) as senior manager of Space Science and Exploration in the Strategic Development Directorate.


He has developed the 20-year framework strategic plan and is active in implementing the strategy, which was approved by the Canadian Space Agency president. He was also appointed acting director, Strategic Development, to oversee development of CSA strategic core businesses. Since 1986 he has served as an aerospace officer in the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) at the Aerospace Engineering Test Establishment, and as technical authority on fixed wing transport and rotary wing utility helicopters at the National Defense Headquarters in Ottawa. At the CAF, Louis served as deputy program manager on the CF-18 Fighter Jet Full-Scale Fatigue Test Program, overseeing the fighter jet test rigs in partnership with the Royal Australian Air Force. In 1996 he joined Bombardier Aerospace as a structures engineer, working as certification authority on the 50- and 70-seat Bombardier regional jets (RJ50 and RJ70) and as structures integrator of business aircraft Challenger 300.


Grenier earned a B.S. in mechanical engineering at Laval University, Quebec and his M.S. in aircraft design at Cranfield University’s School of Aeronautics. He received the Society of British Aerospace Company award for his outstanding aircraft design thesis and the Row Tetlow Prize for Aircraft Composite Research at Cranfield University. In 1988 he joined l'Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec as a registered professional engineer.

She is also responsible for the overall coordination of the Researcher's Mobility Portal. She has previously held various other high-level positions. From January 2000 - July 2001, Gruber was the Secretary General of the European Association for the Education of Adults and Lifelong Learning. Prior to that she had strategic management responsibilities for implementing the Leonardo da Vinci Program at the European Commission, Directorate General Education and Culture, formerly know as DG XXII. In addition, she contributed to the successful implementation of the LINGUA Program from 1990 - 1995.

Benjamin Grumbles became Director of the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality in June 2009.


Grumbles is the former Assistant Administrator for Water at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in Washington, D.C. Before going to the EPA in 2002, Grumbles was deputy chief of staff and environmental counsel for the Committee on Science in the U.S. House of Representatives. He also served for over 15 years in various capacities on the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, including senior counsel for the Water Resources and Environment Subcommittee. From 1993 to 2004, he was an adjunct professor of law at the George Washington University Law School, teaching courses on the Clean Water Act, Safe Drinking Water Act, Ocean Dumping Act, and Oil Pollution Act.


Grumbles' degrees include a B.A., Wake Forest University; J.D., Emory University; and LL.M. in environmental law from the George Washington University Law School.

Kurt Grünewald is a member of the Austrian Parliament and has been the science and health spokesperson for the Green Party in the Austrian Parliament since 1999.


After his studies in medicine, he became a medical doctor and later associate professor of hematology and oncology at the Department of Internal Medicine at the Medical University of Innsbruck, also publishing several papers on the molecular biology of human tumors as well as medical ethics, health, and university and science policy.


Grünewald holds an M.D. from the University of Innsbruck.
