In a recent collaboration with the University of Minnesota
(Minneapolis), Anton Paar's state-of-the-art equipment enabled a team
of chemists, engineers, and mathematicians to uncover new details of a
decades-old mystery: the question of how certain zeolites form. The
small crystals have been used in purifiers, filters, and other devices
for a long time, but their creation and refinement are to a large
extent a matter of sophisticated trial and error. Anton Paar GmbH
provided the loan instrument - a small-angle X-ray scattering system
named SAXSess - and also supplied the data evaluation software for the
investigation of these small particles.

|
bridges vol. 10, June 2006 / noteworthy information
by Andreas Geisler
Air Transport is a vital asset for Europe's economic and social
prosperity. The aeronautics sector contributes about €500 billion to
the EU GNP every year. It employs 3.1 million people, representing 1.9
percent of all EU jobs. Aeronautics exports amount to 60 percent of the
industry's turnover, generating a trade surplus of €2.2 billion and,
with a fleet of about 5000 aircraft, European airlines transport 1
billion people every year.

Protruding Ears - A New Technique of "Soft" Surgery |
|
|
bridges vol. 10, June 2006 / Noteworthy Information
Ear deformity in most cases is a purely aesthetic problem; nonetheless,
it can be very disturbing. Children, especially, often suffer the
adverse psychological effects of being teased or given nicknames by
their peers, and thus are the most likely candidates for ear surgery or
otoplasty. Although ear surgery is best planned before the
socialization process, it can be performed at any age after the ears
have reached full size, around five to six years of age. Complications
are infrequent and usually minor; the real challenge is for the surgeon
to create a natural instead of an "operated on" look.
